Wanderlust…

Traveling is my absolute favorite thing to do and this year we have had to slow down on the travels and focus on another type of adventure, home buying.  With summer in full swing and so many families and friends going on trips, I too am longing to get out and explore.  I am an adventurer!  I live for experiencing new things, going to places I’ve never been, and expanding my horizons.  It’s in my blood.  It’s who I am.  It revitalizes me.  It keeps me feeling alive and creative.  I find inspiration when I travel.  I feel at peace.  No, I am not complaining because I cannot go on a summer vacation right now.  I am not going to throw myself a pity party.  What I will do is show gratitude and appreciate everything I’ve seen and all the places I have been.  I do not take it for granted.  Our life has been full of some pretty awesome adventures and travels and we don’t plan on stopping, just taking a break to focus on “adulting”.

We’ll be back traveling soon enough, but staying put is not easy for me.  To pass the time, I should really start packing up our house, huh?  I am so grateful for the opportunity to purchase a home, as stressful as it may be.  We’ve worked hard, made sacrifices, and we’re excited to (hopefully) soon be in a home of our own.  So, in the meantime as we deal with house hunting stresses and packing, I will live vicariously though everyone else’s epic travel adventures.

So tell me, where are you going this summer? I can’t wait to here about it!

Fun National Sibling Day at Wine and Canvas

This past Sunday just so happened to be National Siblings Day and I got to spend a fun day with my sister at  Wine & Canvas Las Vegas.  They have many locations throughout the country and provide fun painting classes with step-by-step instructions from an artist.  No experience is necessary.  Wine and Canvas Las Vegas offered me 2 complimentary tickets to go check them out and of course, I couldn’t resist.

I’d been to these types of painting classes twice before and both times I really enjoyed it, even if my painting wasn’t a masterpiece!  This was my sister’s first time going and I think she enjoyed the class a lot.

Their studio is located in Henderson, which is where we went for the class, but they also offer classes all over town.  I really like that they travel to other venues so you could really make a night of it.  They also host private events for organizations, clubs, or a party!  And for us with kiddos, they even offer classes for the little ones.  These are called Cookies & Canvas and are offered once a month in their studio.  I cannot wait to take my kids to this class!!

They recommended arriving early, since seating is on a first come basis.  We got there about 10 minutes early and had no issues checking in.  We were given our blank canvases, told where to get our aprons, and they even had cubbies to keep our bags.  The studio has a few long tables, with easels and stools.  The paints you’ll be using are all set up for you on a plate, along with the brushes and a cup of water for rinsing your brushes as needed.

We went on Mimosa Sunday, so they were offering bottomless mimosas for $10.  They had a cute bar area in the back corner and aside from the mimosas, offered beer, wine, and some specialty drinks.  They also had bottled water, soda, and flavored popcorn from Popped, a local Vegas shop.  Our class started at 11am, but their weekday and Saturday classes are in the evening.

We found our spot close to the stage, where the instructor would be teaching from, but it didn’t seem to me that there were any “bad” seats, just further back but you could still see what was going on.  The instructor wore one of those wireless microphones that wraps around the ear, so hearing her was no problem.  Plus, she walked around the room a few times to check out work and answer any questions.

Once we started our painting, our instructor gave us plenty of time to do our work.  She was very encouraging and explained herself great.  Halfway through the class we took a 10 minute break.  Great time for a refill 😉 Before we started up she told us about their upcoming classes and we played a quick little wheel of fortune type game, where you could win stuff, such as a free class, discounts, a free glass of wine, etc.

The whole experience took about an hour and a half.  It was super fun seeing all our final paintings.  We totally made a day of it and grabbed some lunch afterwards.  If you’re looking for something fun and different to do with your sibling or girlfriends, I totally recommend checking out Wine and Canvas Las Vegas!

Spartan Race | Las Vegas Super 2016

Earlier this month, Jason and I completed the Las Vegas Spartan Super, which was actually in Mesquite, AZ about 1.5 hr outside of Vegas.  This was my 6th Spartan Race and Jason’s comeback race.  After breaking his ankle in the January 2015 Spartan Sprint in Temecula, he was off racing for the year.  His plan was to run the Spartan Super last year to complete his first trifecta and he was super bummed about not being able to run it.  So it made perfect sense for him to call this his “redemption” race.  Not only was this his comeback Spartan Race, it was his first race since the accident.

We had a start time of 12:30pm, so we didn’t have to leave too early in the morning.  My sister, nephew, and my nephew’s friend came to cheer us on and take photos along the way!  Huge thanks for the pics!! Since we were both running, we decided to leave the kiddos at home with my parents this time.  I’m glad we did since they would have been bored and whiny, especially the little one.  It was pretty warm that afternoon and we didn’t see my family until we were almost done.

The first half of the course was pretty flat but super sandy (Get it, super sandy..) The second half was not as sandy but had us going up and down the side of this huge hill, that may as well have been a mountain about 3-4 times. Up and down we went. We had all the tried and true obstacles Spartan Race is known for.  I knew that with all my marathon training, I’d not been focusing on upper body strength, so I fully expected to need lots of help over walls and monkey bars.  Thanks to the hubs I made it over all the walls!  I was so proud of him for getting over those walls without assistance, beast mode status!  I will admit though, that I was a little nervous the entire time and probably asked 50 times if his ankle was ok or how his ankle was holding up.

It's always so much more fun going downhill than up!
It’s always so much more fun going downhill than up!

I always like to pretend I'm walking through a field of chocolate frosting during this part of the race.  It's just the right consistency, but sadly, not quite the same smell!!

After 8 miles and lots of obstacles later, we finally made it to the finish line.  Our time was not fast, but we finished together with a few scrapes and bruises, but no broken bones! Success.

That kid up there is my 15 year old nephew who is gonna rock the Spartan Race when he runs his first race with, hopefully this year ;)

So have you ever ran a Spartan Race? Love it, hate it?  What races do you have planned for this spring season? Can’t wait to read all about it.

Visiting Death Valley National Park | Super Bloom

I love to share about our family travels! Big or small, they are all adventures and a fun way for us to be together as a family and hopefully reconnect and disconnect from so many electronics 😉

Our kiddos go to year-round school, so they are currently on their Spring track break for 3 weeks and then Spring Break, so they’ll be at home for a full month without school.  We’re not planning an out of town trip this year, like we have in the past, so we want to be sure to have lots of fun activities and nearby adventures!

On their first weekend of track break, we decided to go on a little day trip to Death Valley.   Death Valley National Park is having a super bloom this spring.  The conditions were just right with the perfect amount of rainfall and light winds so what is normally a few spring flowers popping up here and there became into a field of yellow wildflowers blooming all over the desert!  Apparently this is a pretty rare occurrence, so we packed up our car with lots of water and a picnic lunch and took the 2 hour drive from Las Vegas to check it out.  We were not the only ones with this idea!  The park was full with people wanting to take a look and photograph this phenomenon!

We had a great time and we’re so glad we got to see a different side of Death Valley than we had before.  If you’re in the area and have some time to go out there, check it out.  It’s not like a full field of wildflowers to run through or anything like that, but it is pretty neat to see so many flowers blooming in the desert!

Happy International Women’s Day

I woke up this morning to instagram and facebook posts all about girl power, girl bosses, and women’s rights.  Today is the day that all over the world people are getting together to celebrate women.  The theme of this year’s International Women’s Day is #PledgeforParity.  Check out their website HERE and read all about the campaign, how you can become involved, and activities in your area.

Today, I would like to celebrate all the strong, amazing, and diverse women I know.  Everyday I am in awe of all the accomplishments I see from women all over the country.  Mothers, athletes, daughters, wives, sisters, friends, regardless of our title or status we are all women.  Let’s not compare ourselves to each other.  As the saying goes, “comparison is the thief of joy.”  As women, we have so much to overcome.  We may feel we need to work harder to prove ourselves.  And, yes, this is very true, especially in the workplace.  But, we should not have to work so hard to prove ourselves to each other.  We are all doing the best we can.  We are all working hard.  We are all making the best choices for ourselves.

As mothers, our choices, our actions, make an impact on our families.  Our children look up to us and it’s up to us to be the best we can be for them.  This is pressure enough.  Let’s not pressure ourselves even more with comparing what we do to what anyone else is doing.  Let’s not tear each other down, but build each other up.  There is no room for that in our lives.  Why wast time with criticism, when we can empower each other instead.  Let’s show compassion, love, and acceptance.  It is so much easier to love, than hate.  Our daughters will thank us for it.

To all the women in my life: Thank you!  Thank you for building me up, for pushing me further. Thank you for sharing a little or a lot of your life with me. Thank you for  running with me, for celebrating with me, for laughing with me, for putting up with me, and mostly, just thanks for allowing me to be me and for always being you.  XO!

Fun with Kids in Los Angeles, CA

Whenever I register for a race that’s away from home, I always debate if we should bring the kids or not.  Most times, it just comes down to if there’s anything fun for them to do there or not.  With the L.A. Marathon being in Los Angeles and it also being my first full marathon, I thought it’d be great to bring the kids and make a trip out of it, a little race-cation 😉

WIth a little planning, it is totally feasible to run a great race and have a fun time as a family together. I think it’s important for the kids to see all your hard work pay off in the end.  My kiddos are there when I get home from an early morning run, they see me hobble up the stairs if I’m sore from a long run, they know all about epsom salt baths and icy hot, so why not have them their for the reward after too!  They are my biggest supporters and rather than leave them behind, I try to take them along for most races for all the race day fun and more!

After packet pickup on Saturday, we were all super excited to go eat at Seoul Sausage, since they were previous winners of The Great Food Truck Race on The Food Network.  It originally aired a few years ago, but we just recently saw it on Netflix  as a family.  I knew they were from L.A., so I looked them up and saw they had 2 actual restaurants, plus the food truck.  Turns out, their newest location in Little Tokyo was about 2 miles from the convention center where we’d be for packet pickup.  I wanted it to be a surprise, but I blurted something out to Jason while driving one day and they caught on quickly! So much for the surprise!

Before we left Vegas, I jokingly asked the kids if they thought we’d see the guys from the show and of course, they both said we wouldn’t see them.  Well, to their surprise (and mine) 2 of the 3 owners showed up right as we finished our late lunch.  They were super nice guys and took a picture with the kids.  This really made their day.

After lunch, we went to check into our AirBnB condo and relax a bit.  My nephew really wanted to go check out the Urban Lights exhibit at LACMA once it got dark soo, before grabbing some dinner, we went to check it out.  It was packed, but the kids had fun walking through and playing among all the light posts!

After the marathon, we walked to the Santa Monica Pier and grabbed some food at Bubba Gump Shrimp Co.  Although the food isn’t anything to brag about, it’s a fun atmosphere and super kid friendly.  After lunch we walked down the pier so the kids could ride the roller coaster before heading back to our condo to crash for the day!  We could easily have spent hours at the pier riding rides and playing games, but I was just too exhausted for that this time.  The Santa Monica Pier is a great place to go and spend a few hours enjoying the sights and attractions, plus have fun on the beach!  It’s definitely a must-visit for any Los Angeles trip, with our without kids.

The next day started out a little rocky with cranky kiddos, but thankfully we were able to turn it around and enjoy our morning walking around the grounds of the La Brea Tar Pits and L.A. County Museum of Art.   The weather was perfect for being outdoors and it was exactly what we needed to unwind and relax a bit before driving back home.  The grounds are free to walk around and explore.  We spent about an hour and a half there and could have easily spent another hour there.  Next time we go, we’ll actually go inside the museum and check out those exhibits and IMAX movies. But this time around, the outdoor exhibits and sculptures were just enough to keep them interested in the art and science without getting bored.  Plus, there is plenty of room to run and be kids!  I highly recommend going!

It was a  jam-packed 3 day trip full of fun memories for sure! Getting away to sunny California, running a marathon, and spending quality time with the family is always the best!

So, I’d love to know, do you take your kiddos or family when you travel for a race?

L.A. Marathon 2016 Recap

It took me a few days to figure out what I was going to say about this marathon.  I’ve had such mixed emotions about my performance, but either way,  I set out to complete the L.A. Marathon and I did it!  I ran 26.2 miles through some of the most famous streets in the world.  That in itself was surreal and amazing and emotional to me.  I grew up on the east coast and I never thought I’d live near the west coast. Los Angeles, Hollywood, Beverly Hills, these were all such cool and glamorous places I always said I’d love to visit some day.  Moving to Las Vegas 7 years ago, made visiting those places a reality.  But, never in a million years did I ever think/wish/dream/ that I would run through those places.  So yeah, it was definitely an amazing experience.

Packet pickup was being held at the Convention Center, which was right at the U.S. Olympic Marathon trials finish line.  We arrived Saturday morning just in time to watch the last lap!! It was so cool to see these elite athletes and to catch a glimpse of Meb and Desi Linden!! Being short myself, these are 2 of my favorite runners because they aren’t the typically tall, long-legged runners we associate with running 😉 So excited they made the team and will be heading to Rio this summer!

Since my sister and nephew came to support me (huge, massive thank you to them!!!), that meant we could leave the kiddos sleeping with them while Jason drove me to Dodger Stadium at 5am.  The race started at 7am, but I don’t think I crossed the start line until 7:20 or so.  The energy at the start line was typical.  You could feel everyones anxiety, nervousness, and excitement all rolled up together.  I know I was definitely feeling it.  Once I crossed the start line, I had my first issue after 3 minutes.  My playlist ended up on shuffle somehow and Jason had just updated my phone, so I couldn’t figure out how to get it off shuffle.  We’d worked for hours to get my playlist just right and we had specific songs that were set to come on at various landmarks, so I was upset this was happening.  I pulled off to the side and called Jason in a panic, eventually after about 3-4 minutes I figured it out and started to relax. I was going way faster than I intended too, but with my lost time due to technical difficulties and the wave of runners practically pushing me forward, it was hard to slow down.  I did eventually get back to my groove but I was happy to be running about 5 minutes ahead of my goal.  I saw Jason again between mile 5-6 and that was a nice surprise.  He ran alongside me for a minute or so and then went back to meet up with the rest of the family 🙂

Seeing my family at mile 11 was perfect!  I was feeling so good then and we were right in the middle of Hollywood Blvd.  It was a great boost for the next 5-6 miles.  After that point, I was feeling the heat and getting a bit nauseous.  I was losing my mojo fast and not even listening to Weezer’s Beverly Hills song whilst running through Beverly Hills was working for me.  I was trying to work through it and get back on track but then I started cramping.  My right calf and toes cramped up and I had to pull over and stretch for a bit.  After that, it was just a matter of moving forward and not stopping.  I knew I was nowhere near finishing at my goal time.  From there, it was a very slow 6 miles with lots of walking and stopping to stretch.  I was feeling defeated and the tears were starting to flow freely.  Around mile 23 I started to dig deep.  No more feeling sorry for myself, I had to finish.  I picked up the pace as best I could and cried some more. Then I told myself I would not slow down or walk the last 2 miles.  Thank goodness they were downhill miles!  Finally, I turned the corner and was on Ocean Drive.  I could see the finish line.  It took me FOREVE to get to the finish line, but I didn’t stop “running” or maybe a better term would be trotting or shuffling!   I have never felt more relieved in my life than when I crossed that finish line.  More tears.  I still had about 2 blocks to walk to find my peeps, but when I did see them well, you know, more tears and there may have even been some sobs.  The first thing I said was, “Don’t ever let me do that again”.

Yup, ugly crying was in full effect.
Yup, ugly crying was in full effect.

I gotta say the people of LA rock!!! Seriously, I cannot get over how many spectators were out there cheering us on.  The streets were always lined up with people, not just volunteers, but folks from the communities we ran through.  They cheered, they handed out snacks from orange slices to ice pops to pretzels.  I especially enjoyed seeing the “vasaline” poster boards.  Yup, there were globs of vasaline all over poster boards so runners could just grab and dab where needed.  It was pretty warm, so some people were handing out wet paper towels, others were spraying runners with water, and even better yet there were some water hydrants open to run through!  The people of LA hold a special place in my heart.  The support was beyond anything I’ve ever seen or had at any race!  Thank you, thank you, thank you.

And to Students Run L.A., I send you all a virtual hug and high five! This organization is amazing.  I didn’t know anything about them prior to seeing them on Sunday.  They all wore matching neon yellow tank tops and were everywhere.  You couldn’t miss them.  Seeing these 12,000 or so kids from 7th-12th grade out there running and giving it their all was so inspiring.  At mile 18, a kid about 14 years old patted me on the back while my calf was cramping and said, you got this! Well, you guessed it, more tears.  I googled Students Run L.A. when I got home and here’s part of their mission statement, “to challenge at-risk secondary students to experience the benefits of goal-setting, character development, adult mentoring and improved health by providing them with a truly life-changing experience: The training for and completion of the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon.” Each year, more than 95% of the students who start the marathon, finish the full 26.2 mile course.  In June 2015, 99% of the 740 seniors who completed the LA Marathon with SRLA graduated from high school, and 95% of them planned to go to college. This organization and it’s volunteers are doing some worthwhile work.  Congrats and kudos to them!

Once I calmed down and stopped crying, I sat down for a bit. Then we continued our walk to the Santa Monica Pier and grabbed some food at Bubba Gump Shrimp Co.  After my burger and beer, we walked down the pier so the kids could ride a ride before heading back to our condo in Hollywood.  We were all too tired to go out to eat dinner like we had originally planned, so we ordered some chinese food, popped open our celebratory bottle of Perrier Jouet and called it a day!

It’s way too soon for me to say if I’ll ever run another marathon.  I may be ok with one and done.  But, I gotta say, if there was one marathon for me, it was this one.  The L.A. Marathon delivered on it’s promise of a fun, mostly flat and downhill course.  The support on the course was unmatched and the people were the best!  If you want to run a marathon, run the L.A. Marathon.

Preparing for the LA Marathon

For the past 12 weeks, I’ve been training for my first marathon, the L.A. Marathon and it’s finally (almost) time to go out there and see what I’m made of.  I’ve been a bit of a mess this week.  I’m really excited and anxious to get out there and get it done.  But, at the same time I’m nervous and of course, I’m questioning my training.  I skipped a few runs and didn’t make it to the long run of 21 miles that I wanted reach.  At this point, though, all I can do is trust that I can finish strong because not finishing is not an option.

Aside from getting myself mentally prepared to tackle 26.2 miles, there’s actually a lot of “stuff” needed for race day.  Here’s a quick list of what it’s going to take for me to get out there on Sunday.

And now it’s time for me to get a little bit mushy.  I am seriously awed by all the amazing people in my life.  From encouraging messages to waking up at 4am to run with me, I am so grateful to everyone who’s been with me through these crazy training weeks.  My hubby and kiddos who never doubt that I can do this.  My sister who is coming to L.A. to cheer me on, I may or may not have guilted her into it 😉 I just couldn’t do this on my own, that’s for sure. Thank you so much!  I’ll be thinking of ya’ll big time while running through the streets of LA on Sunday! XO

2016 Goals: Reclaim

While we still have a few days left in January, I thought I’d finally share my goals and plans for this new year.  On January 1st a good friend of mine held a Vision Board Party.  We talked about what worked and what didn’t for 2015.  We discussed our goals and dreams for 2016 and then put together our vision boards to go along with these goals.  Mine is hanging in my office, so I can see it everyday and not lose focus of what I intend on working on for this year.

As I mentioned in my Year in Review post, 2015 was full of ups and downs and we went through a lot.  A lot of my plans and goals for last year ended up being put on hold and on the back burner.  Well, here we are in 2016 and I am ready to RECLAIM those goals and take on some new ones.  I intend on taking on 2016 with lots more determination and hard work than ever before.

A big running goal to start the year has been to run the LA Marathon.  Training for this race has really been kicking my butt and it’s taken up a lot of my time.  It has definitely been a challenge.  I actually have my last long run of 21 miles on Monday and then I taper for the race, which is on Feb. 14.  I’m super nervous and excited about meeting this goal! 26.2 miles here I come.

I’ve got lots of business goals and plans that I am working on and have started to put in place.  I’ll be working on rebranding my photography business, which means new marketing materials, updated portfolio, etc.  Fun Times for sure to reclaim my business and get back on track!  I need to make money to pay for all my races 😉

A personal goal I have for myself is to focus more on my style.  I work from home, I workout, and that’s most of my week.  I never have anything to wear when it’s time to go out for a nice dinner or anywhere else that’s not they gym, really!  Shopping is a chore for me.  I really do not enjoy it at all.  So, my goal for 2016 is to figure out a way to enjoy shopping for clothes and shoes that are not fitness related.  I have no problem spending $100+ on running shoes.  $12 for a pair of Injingi socks, no problem!  My favorite running bra is about $60.  Now ask me to spend more than $30 on a top and I hesitate!  This is gonna be a tough one, but i think it’s important for me to find some balance in this aspect of my life and to reclaim my fashion sense!

Lastly, now that both of my kiddos are in full-day school (YAY!!!!) I have a lot more time to focus.  This has been a blessing and a challenge.  Time management has never been my strongest attribute, so I fully intend on working on that this year.  Since I mostly work from home, I’m putting together a schedule for myself so I can have ample time to reclaim all the pieces that make up my days: motherhood, housekeeping, workflow, and fitness.

How about you? What are your goals for 2016? Is there anything you’re looking forward to?

10 Things I’ve Learned from Marathon Training

I announced last month that I was all signed up for the LA Marathon on February 14, so I thought I’d share a bit of how my training has been going.  With just 36 days to go, things are getting serious.

10 Things I’ve Learned from Marathon Training (so far!):

  1. I can wake up at 4am and run endless amounts of miles in the cold and dark morning.

  2. Even if it’s sunny in the winter, I should wear sunblock.  I will tan.

  3. Life will revolve around running.

  4. I can chafe in places I didn’t realize were possible.

  5. It’s best to run long miles with a group or a friend.

  6. I need more running clothes.

  7. A good pair of running shoes is hard to find.

  8. I’m always hungry.

  9. Songs I used to like can become annoying after hearing them so many times on my runs.

  10. It’s ok to be proud of my accomplishments during this journey.

So far, my longest run has been 17 miles, just this past Sunday.  I was most definitely walking with a bit of a wobble afterwards, but I ended up not being as sore as I thought I would be.  Although the idea of 26.2 miles is still pretty daunting, I feel that I will be able to do it.  On runs where I am alone, I try to envision what it will be like to run the streets of L.A. and take in the sights. I try to imagine the sound of the crowds cheering us along the way.  I look beyond that and picture myself crossing the finish line and seeing my family at the end waiting for me.  I can almost see their faces and I just hope they’ll be proud of me then.  That one day, they’ll know I’ve done all of this for them.  It’s these thoughts, these emotions, these visualizations, that keep me going.  There’s no quitting now.
