Badass Dash Las Vegas Race Recap

This past weekend I ran the Badass Dash for the first time at Sam Boyd Stadium.  I ran 2 other Badass Dashes a few years ago, both were at Silverton Casino and they were lots, so I was looking forward to checking this race out.  I ran with a team of 4 others, 2 girls and 2 boys, plus me! The Badass Dash is a 7K (4.4 mile) obstacle course adventure race.

We had a 9am start time and by then it was pretty warm outside and we were ready to get started.  Unfortunately, they don’t stagger wave start times the way Spartan Races or larger marathon events do.  So, there were hundreds of people lined up for the 9am start.  They couldn’t let all hundreds of us go at the same time since that would cause major congestion on course, so they let us go about 50 at a time every 5 minutes. It worked out great because there was no bottlenecking at obstacles however we waiting in the sun for almost an hour and that was no fun. I would suggest they give us staggering or wave start times, so we don’t have to just wait in line for so long! That would help us prepare a lot better and we wouldn’t have to wait an hour in line!

The Badass Dash is not intended to be a super intense race like the Spartan Races or Tough Mudders.  They are geared towards having fun and are a great introduction to obstacle course races.  They have over 40 obstacles, from super easy to difficult, throughout the course which is nice! I felt like the walls were challenging but also achievable for most, so that was a big plus!  Being in a stadium, I was totally expecting the stairs to be part of the race, and boy did I feel the burn on those! Once we got through the up and down of pretty much the entire stadium stairs + all the ones outside, they set up the last 10 or so obstacles in the middle of the field.  I really thought that was pretty neat and totally different for me, since I haven’t ran a Spartan Stadium Sprint yet.  Lastly, they cooled us off with a fun car wash/spider web obstacle before crossing the finish!

Once my team was finished, it was then time for the kiddos to race! They were running with their friends which made it super fun for them.  Both Diego and Elysse did the 2K (1.2 mile) Kid Dash.  Remember those killer stairs I mentioned? This was also part of their race and I am so proud that they pushed through on those! The rest of the kid obstacles were also all in the middle of the stadium.  They did most of the same last 10+ obstacles we had during our race as well.  All 4 of them finished strong and had a great time, even if they did complain a bit about the heat!

I would totally recommend this race if you’re new to obstacle course racing and even if you are an OCR junkie! It’s challenging and fun 🙂 Go out there and give it a try.  You just might surprise yourself 🙂

4 Tips for Getting Kids Active

All kids are different and have their own unique personalities with very specific likes and dislikes.  Some will gravitate towards athletics or have a natural ability for a sport, others prefer to read a good book, or can have a natural ability for math or science.  Whatever your child’s natural ability or focus is, as parents, of course we want to encourage our kids to follow their dreams.

As parents, we also want the best for our kids and we want them to be healthy.  We all know that too much time in front of a screen creates a sedentary lifestyle and we don’t want that for them or for us! So what can we do to encourage our kids to be more active, without making them hate us for it?

When I started running half marathons and obstacle course races, my kids became curious.  Why was I coming home drenched in sweat while they were barely waking up? Why did we suddenly have a big tractor tire in our backyard? What was a PR? Why did I need something called GU (gross!)? So, I showed them.  They come to most of my races and are my biggest cheer group! They come to boot camps and sometimes they join in on some of it.  I got them involved in my new found passion for running and my excitement became contagious.  Soon, they were joining me on short runs around the block.  They were setting goals for themselves to beat, their own Personal Records.  We made up little boot camp style workouts for them in the backyard and eventually we signed them up for some of their own races and then they had to “train”! Then came race day and they were stocked to receive their own medals and see all their hard work pay off.

Tips for Getting Kids Active

  1. Lead by example.  Show excitement about going for a run or working out.  If you complain about having to workout, there’s no way they’re going to want to join you.  As the saying goes, you don’t have to workout, you get to workout! Keep a positive mindset for your own activities because those little ones are always watching us 🙂
  2. Get them involved.  Ask them to join you for a run, if running is your thing.  Get yoga DVDs that are kid-friendly and do them together.  Go to the park and play basketball together.  Plan hikes as a family.  Whatever gets them excited about being active!
  3. Reward them.  Set goals together and when they reach them, give them a reward.  It doesn’t have to be anything outrageous, just something that will keep them motivated to keep going.
  4. No pressure! Don’t make it a chore for them.  It should never be about punishment, but rather something they look forward to regularly.  Keep it fun, change it up a bit, and go with the flow.

It’s not always easy for us.  One kiddo likes it better than the other.  They still fight and tease each other sometimes during our family runs.  They can be competitive, even with the almost 4 year age gap.  But, as parents we just keep encouraging them.  I keep inviting them on runs with me and sometimes they don’t want to and I don’t make them.  Other times they ask to join me on their own.  It’s not perfection but they are more active than they used to be and now they are really understanding the importance of taking care of their bodies.

Friday Five | Things I’m Loving Right Now

I’m really looking forward to this weekend!  Tonight I have book club with my girls and it’s our 2 year anniversary!  I can’t believe we’ve lasted this long but I’m so glad for it because it is something I look forward to each month.  It’s just a fun time to indulge a little in yummy food, wine, and especially good company!  You can read more about why I love book club and how to start one of your own book clubs HERE!  So, number one on my list of 5 things I am really loving right now is gonna be my book club!

Two more thing I’m really loving right now are my new facial cleanser and moisturizer.  I’ve always just bought facial cleansers and moisturizers at CVS or Target.  Nothing fancy.  However, as I’m getting older I thought it would be a good idea to invest a little more in my face, being it’s the first thing people see, right?  I went to Sephora a few weeks ago and although I felt quite overwhelmed, I ended up purchasing the Philosophy Purity Made Simple Cleanser.  I normally would buy cleansers with some sort of exfoliation because I felt they got a better clean, but like I said, I’m getting older and I thought something a little more gentle on my skin would be best.  I really love that it’s a one-step cleanser.  It is great at removing makeup and it’s gentle enough to use everyday after my workouts.  The best thing is that my skin doesn’t feel dry or tight after using it, like other cleansers I’ve tried.  I stuck to  Philosophy and also purchased their Hope in a Jar moisturizer.  So far, I’m really liking it too!  It’s light and airy and hasn’t made me break out! YAY 🙂 I purchased the original, but I’ll be sure to get the one with SPF next time.

Another thing I can’t get enough of lately is Vita Coco Cafe.  This stuff is so refreshing. It’s made with coconut water so it’s packed with electrolytes.  Add a shot of espresso and a splash of milk and it makes for a great pick-me-up!  I like to have one before/after a long run or well, just because they are delicious!  If you haven’t tried it, you must!

Lastly, I’m really diggin’ my Garmin Forerunner 15 with hear rate monitor!  It was an anniversary gift from my mom & sister in August and it totally rocks.  It gives me all the stats I need for my runs and workouts (when used in Indoor mode) and also serves as a step counter during the day.  I promise to give a full review soon!

So, there ya have it!  What kinds of things are you loving right now?  Sharing is caring 🙂

Tips for Keeping Your New Year Health & Fitness Goals

Right now, most of us are planning, making lists, and getting ready for the new year ahead.  We’re reflecting on this year that is so quickly coming to an end – seriously, where did the time go? Just about everybody always adds losing weight and/or exercise to their list of goals for the new year.  I know I always do.  But what I’ve learned is that just writing down or saying “I want to lose XX lbs. in 2014” or “I want to start working out more” Is not gonna cut it.  I know, because I always did this and always failed.  I failed because there was no action plan.  It’s great to set goals to become healthier or more active in your life, but without a plan, it’s just a dream.  This is the year to turn those dreams into reality.  Here are a few tips to help you get started on the right track!

1.  Have a game plan.  Saying and doing are 2 different things.  Write down how you plan to lose those XX pounds.  Will you do a 21 day sugar detox? Will you practice better portion control?  Will you join a gym? Workout 3 days a week for 30 mins? What workouts will you try? Write it all down and keep it in a handy place to go back to!

2.  State why you want to make these changes.  These statements can be very powerful and have a big impact on keeping yourself motivated to make these lifestyle changes in the coming months.

3.  Put it on your calendar.  Make appointments, set reminders on your phone, and/or recurring events on your calendar.  Whether it be scheduling time to go to a fitness class, go for a jog, or pop in a workout DVD, make it a part of your daily routine.

4.  Weekly meal plan.  This is major if you are looking to make healthy lifestyle changes. Pick a day out of the week that works for you (Sunday is my day) and write down your meal plans for the week then go shopping accordingly.  If you have a super busy schedule, then you can even try prepping your meals on this day to make it easy to just grab & go during the week.  This will really help you stay on track and not make hasty or bad food choices because you don’t know what to make for dinner or you didn’t pack your lunch and just went out for fast food.

5.  Be realistic.  Saying you want to workout 5 days a week can be daunting, especially if you haven’t been on any set routine before!  Start off with smaller goals and work your way up to the ultimate goal.  Start by making it a goal to workout 2 days a week for the month of January (Don’t forget to put it on your calendar!)  Then add a day each month thereafter and by May you’ll be working out 5 days a week!

6.  Step out of your comfort zone.  Sometimes we need to try new things and go out on a limb a bit because that’s where the magic happens.  If you do the same thing over and over, it can start to get boring, so try something new!  It could be a new healthy meal, a new fitness class, or even just a different running trail.  You’ll never know if you’ll like something new unless you try it.  It will be scary, but just think how proud you’ll feel when you actually do it.  You may find you really love it and if not, at least you can say you tried it!

7.  Keep yourself accountable.  Telling someone else about your goals is a good way to stay accountable.  Having a good support group will help you stay on track with your goals.

8.  Sign up for a race. I know this is what keeps me going and I firmly believe that signing up for a race will keep you motivated too.  It’ll give you a goal to aim for.  Sign up for your first 5K or your first marathon.  Try an obstacle course race or a fun run.  There are so many options available right now, that there is bound to be something you’ll find fun.  Sign up with a few months in advance and get to training!  You won’t regret it.

9. Don’t give up.  None of us are perfect.  We’re gonna miss a workout or indulge in a meal that’s not part of our meal plan.  It happens.  The key is to not let one bad day, ruin your goals.  Honestly one bad day won’t ruin your progress, giving up will.  So, if you know you’re going out for a special occasion, allow yourself a “cheat meal” and move on. So you missed a workout because you worked late that day.  It happens.  Those are small bumps on the road.  We all have them.  Don’t be too hard on yourself.  I’ve read it takes 21 days to make something become a habit, so don’t give up!

10.  Rewards.   Who doesn’t love to get rewarded for a job well done?  Some people like to buy themselves a new outfit after reaching their weight loss goals others will plan a night out.  Workout 3 days a week for 30 days and get a pedicure.  Get a new playlist for your ipod after you run your first 5K.  Whatever it is, it doesn’t have to be expensive or big it just needs to be something to keep you motivated!  Set your goal + reward and you’ll be on your way 🙂

Do you have any tips for staying on track with your fitness goals?  I’d love to hear them.

2013 The Year of the Races

If you asked me last year where I thought I’d be at the end of 2013, this would definitely not be it!! I never dreamed I’d be sharing my personal ups and downs on this blog.  I never imagined I’d sign up, nonetheless finish a half marathon.  Yup, 2013 has been a life changer.  I went from never participating in any sort of running/obstacle races  to running 6 races in one year.  It’s been an amazing journey and I couldn’t have done it without the support from family and friends, especially those who came out and ran alongside me!  I used to dread working out and therefore rarely (read: NEVER) did it.  I only ate “healthy” if I was on a “diet” and let’s be honest, fad diets aren’t healthy.  They don’t last.  Only a change in your lifestyle and your attitude is what makes the changes happen.  The magic is in the commitment, not a pill.

I found that change in me by signing up for all these races/events.  Signing up for these events has kept me on track with my exercise routine and eating habits.  It’s given me a goal to reach and has made all the difference in my attitude towards working out and eating healthy.  I can’t wait to see what 2014 will bring! So far we’re signed up for our second Tough Mudder in April and signing up for Blood, Sweat, and Beers 10K trail run in March.  I really want to run a Ragnar Relay race and as soon as I learn to ride a bike (Yes, you read that right, I don’t know how to ride a bike!!) I want to do a sprint triathalon.

The Color Run 5K really introduced me to event racing.  I had no idea what to expect, from the packet pickup to to the run itself, it was a great first experience!

After Color Run, I did Tough Mudder!  I’d trained hard and really got into fitness during this time. I’ve said it time and time again, Tough Mudder changed my life!

The obstacle course race bug hit me hard and in May, I was ready for more! This time, it was a family affair and my sister, Norma, joined me for the Badass Dash 7K.  The kiddos also participated in their first kid OCR and loved it!

Later in May, my sister and I, along with our friend, Veronica, did the Race for the Cure 5K with the LVAC team.  This is a very important cause for us and our family and we were excited to have a part in raising awareness!

As most of you know, summers in Vegas are HOT! So, summer was spent vacationing and having fun with the kids with our Summer Bucket List.  Towards the end of summer, I began training for the Rock N Roll Half Marathon

I recently blogged about my first half marathon experience, if you missed it, you can check it out HERE! If you want the short version: It was by far one of the hardest and most amazing experiences I’ve had in my life!

Six days after the half marathon, I joined some of my book club girls for the Dirty Dash 5K and my son did the 1 miles Piglet Plunge!  What a way to end a super fun year of races! You can read my review of that race, HERE.

I’d love to hear about your favorite races of 2013 and what you’re planning for 2014! Do you have any suggestions on races I should be looking into? Don’t be shy…

Let’s Stop Comparing.

Did anyone else watch the NYC Marathon on TV this past Sunday? I watched bits of it and was so inspired.  I know I will never-ever-ever run as fast as the top female finisher! She ran 26.2 miles in 02:25:07.  Amazing!  To put things into perspective, I’m hoping to finish my first half marathon, 13.1 miles, in around 2:30.  Of course, running is her life, not a hobby.  She’s an elite athlete and to compare myself to her, for any one of us to compare ourselves to her, would be wrong.  It’s unrealistic and not healthy.  So, why do we still do it?  We may not compare ourselves to top athletes, but we compare ourselves to other women.  We’re bombarded by stories on social media about all these amazing success stories and we start to feel bad about ourselves.  We start to second guess ourselves, second guess our own progress.  I know it happens to me.  I’ll be like, “It only took her 3 months to lose 30 lbs, it took me a year!  What’s wrong with me?” “She can do how many pull ups? I just want to do 1!” I could go on and on, but you get the point.

Let’s stop comparing ourselves to others.  The only person we should compare ourselves to, is ourselves. Let’s focus on becoming better than we were, not better than so and so.  We are all at different stages in our lives and journeys, so why compare our middle, with someone else’s end.  How do I know what it took for that lady to lose 30 lbs in 3 months! Maybe it was hard for her, maybe it was easy for her.  I don’t know.  I only know that it was her journey, her story, her moment.  Not mine.  It took me over a year to lose 30 lbs and I’m ok with that.  Why? Because it’s my story, my journey.

Let’s look back at who we were last year, last month, last week, and be proud of the progress we’ve made, the goals we’ve reach, and the hurdles we’ve overcome.  Not just in fitness, but in life too.  That is much more rewarding and much more realistic.  Let’s be happy with ourselves.  Let’s live our life fully and wholeheartedly.  Let’s promise to stop comparing ourselves to others and focus on ourselves this week! Write down 5 things you’ve done this year that you are proud of and start feeling good about yourself.  Deal? Deal!

Let's stop this and start living our own life!
